Two Wrongs

A renowned criminal psychologist crosses over into vigilantism.

Dr. Marvin Seaverman, a criminal psychologist and police consultant, has always wanted to protect children, but when he cannot even protect his own daughter, Debbie, something breaks inside him. Feeling powerless and frustrated, Merv turns his fury against the very fiends his training has taught him to understand: abusers of children.

For over a decade, Merv has methodically catfished pedophiles, murdering the most egregious abusers, while successfully covering his tracks. All this time, the NYPD has remained oblivious to the existence of a vigilante serial killer in their city.

This week, Merv has slipped, and Detective Sharone Lazar of the 101st precinct—Debbie’s closest friend since childhood—has discerned the pattern. Sharone has not yet figured out the killer’s identity, but it is only a matter of time.

Doing What It Takes

A reclusive ex-mobster leads his protégé to the top of a local gang.

Jerry Kaufman was a Jewish gangster in 1950s Bronx. With a gift for strategy and a hard punch, Jerry was a rising star in the Italian mob, when he was betrayed and forced to abandon the life. Now a wheelchair-bound widower in his 90s, Jerry lives in near-isolation in a suburb just outside the Florida Everglades.

Looking back on his life, Jerry cannot shake the feeling that he missed his chance, so when he witnesses his caretaker’s son, Amede Delwa, beaten in a gang fight, Jerry sees an opportunity to try again, this time by proxy.

Amede is a Haitian man trying to make it in a Cuban gang, an outsider’s struggle Jerry viscerally understands. Sharp, strong, and charismatic, Amede has the skills to make it big. What he lacks in experience, Jerry can supply, along with money, connections, and strategy. But it will be up to Amede to do what it takes.

Homosexual Relationships and Orthodox Judaism

Can Orthodox Jewish communities welcome gay couples and their families without setting aside halakha?

In 2012, Rabbi Zev Farber argued that asking gay Orthodox Jews to remain celibate for life was neither realistic nor compassionate. This book develops the halakhic argument behind that position. Farber examines the biblical and rabbinic sources on same-sex relations, surveys Orthodox responses to homosexuality, and revisits Rabbi Norman Lamm’s 1974 proposal to understand their situation through ʾônēs raḥmana paṭrei “God exempts those acting under duress.”

Building on Rabbi Meshulam Roth’s reading of a Talmudic case in which a woman is left with no permissible partner, Farber shows how a lack of a viable alternative can itself constitute ʾônēs. The question is not whether gay people can control their desires at any given moment, but whether halakha can demand that they forgo an intimate relationship for their entire lives.

Instead of pressuring homosexuals to be celibate, or demanding gay couples to negotiate a list of permitted acts and limit intimacy to moments of overwhelming need, Farber’s framework offers Orthodox communities a halakhic basis for welcoming gay couples and their children as families, without asking them to hide their relationships or live under communal judgment.
